In This Week's R&R Alternative/Active/Rock Column

Dave Frisina grew up along the north shore of Long Island in Smithtown, N.Y., but migrated to Syracuse in upstate New York after his college days at nearby Cortland State. While he majored in physical education, he also dabbled in radio as a founding member of WSUC, the college's student-run station. And it was his deep love of music that led him to focus on radio and start doing weekends at rock WAQX (95X)/Syracuse after graduating in 1978. Thirty years later, Frisina is still rocking the Salt City.

While at WAQX -- where he stayed until 2003 -- Frisina held several positions in addition to handling middays. He served as MD, APD and even interim PD on a couple of occasions.

In April 2003, Frisina decided that things at WAQX had "changed dramatically," and he accepted an offer from crosstown Galaxy Communications classic rock WTKW (TK99) to continue his midday dynasty. Along the way he has added MD/APD duties, and last fall, when Galaxy acquired classic rock WOUR/Utica, N.Y., Frisina began doing dual midday shows live -- not simulcast.

Learn more about Frisina's current duties and his own unique version of "localism" in the Sept. 26 issue of R&R.
